Fractional CIO

Senior technology leadership for organizations that have an IT team, a budget line and a board to answer to, but not a full-time CIO. Strategy, budget and vendor governance, security oversight and the hard conversations, from a technology executive who has held the chair.

What you get

The CIO’s responsibilities, carried by someone who has done the job, at a fraction of the cost of the seat.

Strategy and roadmap

A technology plan tied to the business plan, with priorities, sequence and owners, reviewed with leadership on a set cadence rather than when something breaks.

Budget and vendor governance

A purchasing process that holds, renewals negotiated before they auto-renew, lease versus buy and build versus buy decided on numbers, and licences that match the people who use them.

Security oversight

A risk register the board can read, incident readiness that has been tested, insurer and client questionnaires answered with evidence, and the regulatory obligations that apply to you tracked and owned.

Leading the function

Your IT staff and your managed service provider get direction, priorities and someone to escalate to. We develop the team you have rather than replace it.

Board and leadership reporting

Plain-language reporting on risk, spend and progress. Leadership hears what it needs to decide, not a vendor’s roadmap.

The programs that follow

When the roadmap calls for a migration, a fleet rollout, a security program or AI on Mac, the same team scopes and delivers it, with no hand-off and no second vendor.

How it works

  1. Start with a discovery call

What the organization runs, who runs it, what the board is asking for and where the pain is. We’ll say whether a fractional CIO fits or whether a one-hour Technology Review on the urgent topic is the better first step.

  2. Assess

An initial assessment of the technology estate, the team, the contracts, the security posture and the obligations. You get a written picture and a first roadmap leadership can act on.

  3. Set the cadence

We agree the time commitment and the rhythm — leadership meetings, IT team check-ins, vendor reviews, board reporting — and we show up to it.

  4. Deliver and adjust

The roadmap turns into programs, the programs get run, and the plan is revised as the business changes. When you are ready for a full-time CIO, we help you hire one and hand over.

Who it’s for
  • Mid-size organizations with IT staff or a managed service provider, and nobody senior setting the direction.
  • Companies across several sites or entities, where technology decisions are being made differently in each.
  • Regulated and client-audited firms — financial services, healthcare, legal, engineering — that need someone accountable for security and compliance.
  • Businesses in a growth phase, an acquisition, or between CIOs.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the trusted technology advisor?
Scale and accountability. The trusted technology advisor is built for owners and managers who make the decisions themselves. The fractional CIO takes accountability for the technology function — strategy, budget, security, the team and the board — in an organization large enough to have one.
Do you replace our IT manager?
No. We lead and develop the people you have. Most IT managers are relieved to have someone senior to set priorities, carry the budget conversation and take the board meeting.
Can you work with our managed service provider?
Yes. We set the direction, hold the provider to the contract, and keep the day-to-day support where it is. We are clear from the first week about who owns what.
How much time does it take?
It depends on the size of the organization and what the roadmap calls for. We agree a time commitment on the discovery call and review it with you; it goes down as the team and the processes mature.
What if we eventually need a full-time CIO?
Then we help you hire the right one and hand over a documented function. Working ourselves out of the role is a good outcome.
